THE TRAVELER

I cannot go back to where I was.
A day never leaves to return:
Morning fades into night
as night into morning.

The meter runs as I run
And runs still when I stop
Shifting weight from left to right,
I am wherever my soles are on.

And though it’s a long way through the 30s,
I really haven’t covered much
d i s t a n c e.
No one ever has.
